NYTimes: Fentanyl Outpaces Heroin as the Deadliest Drug on Long Island. Counselors call the drug’s surge the “scariest thing” they have seen, while officials are calling for “intervention from all levels of government.”

An anesthetic commonly used for surgery has surpassed heroin to become the deadliest drug on Long Island, killing at least 220 people there in 2016, according to medical examiners’ records.

NYTimes: The Stolen Supreme Court Seat: Senate Republicans’ nine-month blockade of President Obama’s nominee was an outrageous, infuriating stunt. And then it worked.

Soon after his inauguration next month, President-elect Donald Trump will nominate someone to the Supreme Court, which has been hamstrung by a vacancy since the death of Justice Antonin Scalia in February. There will be public debates about the nominee’s credentials, past record, judicial philosophy and temperament. There will be Senate hearings and a vote.
